Art Adventures in California

In August I took a trip to California to see family, friends and to get arty farty.I was able to document most of my art adventures and I would like to take a moment to share them with you!
I did a "Meet the Artist" pop up live painting event inside Mystic Journey Bookstore in my hometown, Venice Beach.

I just loved painting in their patio garden! It was a warm evening with a nice breeze, I was surrounded by big buddha statues and some of the biggest crystals I had ever seen. People trickled through and I had a wonderful time painting and talking to everyone.
The painting I was working on is inspired by the Triple Goddess: Maiden, Mother Crone. I depicted each aspect of the trinity, but as mermaids.

I have not finished the painting yet but here are some progress photos taken during my live painting:

So yes….I am looking forward to finding some time to finish this one up. I will post an entry when its all done!

I had a couple tables set up full of artly goodness like small original paintings on wood, stretched canvas prints, button pins, stickers and more:

See something you have to have. See if you can nab it in my etsy shop.
The next art adventure took place in the Arts district of Downtown LA. I met up with my friend and fellow artist Jennifer Korsen at her studio and we proceeded to paint a super secret collaborative mural in the Alleyway:

My final art adventure took me to San Diego California to a place called Writerz Blok. Its a community art space with a huge lot full of walls covered tip to tail in spray paint that are open to any artists interested in leaving their mark.
And so I did...
Work in progress, laying down base colors

Fine tuning with highlights and shadow

Got the outlines in and now its all done!

So there is a glimpse into my arty shenanigans during my Cali trip.
Watch a video I made with footage from the trip on my You Tube Channel, Here

I would love to do more traveling and paint/create/collab in new places with new friends because the experience was very inspiring!

More art updates soon. I have a huge amount of new creations to show you.
In the mean time, catch up with me on my Youtube channel, Periscope, Instagram and see what sort of art goodies are up for grabs in my Etsy shop

Much love!

The Long Ride Home acrylic painting

I have been so preoccupied with painting on non traditional surfaces such as cow skulls, walls, recycled materials and the human body, that I had forgotten to share with you my most recently completed painting on canvas. Oops!

So without further adieu:

"The Long Ride Home"
12"x16"
Original acrylic painting on canvas
by Chelsea Rose

This painting is the first in a series I plan to make involving placing my strange creature ladies in fairly mundane places/doing fairly mundane things. Such as, this first piece, commuting home on a train. Other ideas include waiting at bus stops, eating at a restaurant, working an office job, taking a bath and so on. I have sketches of many of these ideas at the ready, I just need to buckle down and begin to pump out paintings for this series.

Now, since I am a fiend for work in progress photos I will share the creative process involved in the production of "The Long Ride Home." Enjoy!

It all began with a  rough concept sketch in my drawing book. I felt confident enough with it that I went ahead and projected my sketch onto to canvas and proceeded to transfer it (using an india ink marker) while adding more dimension and detail.

I then began to add the first layers of color. I hadn't done a color study for this painting so I was making up the color scheme as I went along which was mostly fun, but a bit nerve racking at times.

By the time I went through with my 2nd layer of color I had made some big decisions about the interior of the train car as well as the outside sky/cityscape. My favorite movie of all time is a Studio Ghibli animation called "Spirited Away" and if you are a fan of the film, you should be able to tell right away that I recreated my own interpretation of the iconic red seated, wood interior train. If you have yet to see this movie, you must go watch it. Now! Seriously…
I also changed the sky to a dusky/sunsety affair, while pushing the city scape farther back.

During the final layers of color I added small details like her leg hair and shoes.

And to cap off these work in progress photos, here is a nice wide look into my lil art factory.

I think my next painting in this new series of mine is going to be one of my creature ladies eating a bowl of ramen at a lil restaurant.

Here is a lil sketch of the ramen painting concept. Next step is to select a canvas and get to work projecting my sketch onto it so that I can begin to paint. I will keep you posted on its progress.

Much love and light,
-Chelsea Rose

Mother Of Faces acrylic painting on canvas

Today I finished a tribute acrylic painting for my favorite animation of all time: Avatar: Last Airbender.

"Mother of Faces"
16"x20"
original acrylic painting on canvas
by Chelsea Rose

This painting is inspired by “The Mother Of Faces” a spirit who only appears in the Avatar Last Air Bender graphic novel “The Search.” As with many of the characters in the Avatar world, Mother of faces is a fascinating and strong female archetype (IE: Compassionate Mother Protector and Gentle Giant) that shows great heart and generosity while still commanding respect and awe. The mother’s ability to emerge and become mightier than the very mountains around her sacred pool was especially inspiring to me. I enjoyed exploring and expressing her tremendous scale within my painting, while also aiming to capture her surreal beauty and grace. As an artist, I usually gravitate to subject matter related to the sacred feminine, warrior women, and the paranormal or metaphysical. I saw all of these things in The Mother of Faces and felt she would lend herself well to my painting approach as well as my existing body of work.

And...It all started with a pen and ink sketch:

Once I had the pen and ink sketch I projected it onto canvas and then began to load the canvas with color.

And then today I added the final touches:

I was in a bit of a rush to create this because only a few weeks ago did I realize that there was an open call to artists for the Legend of Korra / Avatar: Last Air Bender Tribute Exhibition showing at Gallery Nucleus in early March. The deadline for art submissions is Feb. 20th. Yikes! I submitted my painting today and I am crossing my fingers that they pick mine to exhibit( they are only choosing 15 pieces of art from all of the open call submissions. Eeep!)

In other news, I am currently working on creating a astrology sign series which has been lots of fun so far. I began working on the series because I am going to be a featured artist for Splendorporium's March show, which is Zodiac themed. I am also working on a painting for an upcoming "Sasquatch" themed group show at Good Gallery, opening in March. Oh! And, I will be doing a month long art install at The Bike Bar during March. Soooo, March is shaping up to be a pretty busy month! No complaints here. More updates and photos soon.

Much love and light,
-Chelsea Rose

Sailor Moon inspired painting and Art Giveaway contest

When I was a little girl I was obsessed with the cartoon Sailor Moon. In the mornings before school I would watch it on TV while eating breakfast. It began a life long appreciation for anime, comics and alien warrior princesses which ultimately contributed to the development of my artistic style.  To my extreme delight, for the 20th anniversary of Sailor Moon, a new version was released in 2014 called "Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal." This new release rekindled my obsession with the anime series and so I couldn't help but do a little fan art tribute.

It started with this pen and ink drawing in my sketchbook:

I was pretty excited with how the sketch came out so I decided to do a painting based on it:

"Sailor Lucid"
10"x12"
original acrylic painting by Chelsea Rose

I made sure to add my signature third eye, as well as the single daggered pupil I draw all too often.
I think it worked well, lending Sailor Moon a very eerie, whimsical, mysterious edge.

The full original painting is available in my etsy shop for $200. Interested in giving her a good home?
 Have a look here.

In other news I am having an art give away contest!

In order to enter to win this 3"x3" mini original acrylic painting of mine, plus a 10 pack of my hand made stickers you must do the following:

The High Priestess, Tarot Show at Splendorporium

I have been getting involved in more group shows lately. I find themed shows very helpful in challenging me to draw and paint outside of my usual conceptual directions. One such recent group show that I participated in was a Tarot card themed art show at Splendorporium Gallery in Portland Oregon. I have always been drawn to Tarot cards and other divination tools so I was super stoked to pick a Tarot card to paint in my own style.

I chose to do The High Priestess Card:

(9"x12" Original acrylic painting on wood cut by Chelsea Rose)

Here is what a standard High Priestess card looks like:

So yes, I took a LOT of liberties in making this card my own. But I did keep some aspects the same, like my Priestess( who bares a striking resemblance to the caterpillar from Wonderland) is blue, while the card has the priestess in blue robes. My priestess also sits on a throne of sorts, but they are huge purple mushrooms. I also incorporated the black and white towers into my painting. And instead of having my priestess hold the Tora, I have her holding another book of knowledge that has a down pointing triangle( which is a symbol of the sacred feminine) which I adorned with an all seeing eye.

All in all, it was a great deal of fun getting to research the meaning behind all the symbols present in the card and It has me really considering doing an entire Tarot deck in my style!

And here are a couple photos from the opening reception at the gallery:

It was very interesting to see other people's interpretations of various Tarot cards. Some were literal kinda like mine because they incorporated some of the traditional symbols from the cards, and others were very abstract.

Here is a photo of my friend Darci, Silly.Wierd.Things card:

She did "The Moon" Tarot Card and I think it came out beautifully in her style.

And here I am with my painting at the opening reception. As usual I am too short to manage a photo with my art that is not entirely awkward :)

The show is up for the remainder of the month so go check it out if you are in Portland!

Blessings,
-Chelsea Rose

Beyond the Tentacle, Nautilus painting and show

Have a look at another new painting of mine:

Saint Nautilus
16"x20"
original acrylic painting on canvas
by Chelsea Rose

It all started out with a call to artists for a Cephalopod( marine animals like octopus, squid, cuttlefish, Nautilus and more) themed group show at Good: a gallery.

I was instantly drawn to the Nautilus because of its amazing spiral shell. So I drew a concept sketch:

pen and ink concept sketch

I liked my drawing enough that I quickly transferred it onto a canvas I had painted a watery background on with acrylic:

pen and ink drawing on top of acrylic painted canvas

Then I started working on the base color layers

Once the colors were worked out I began adding details

The show's deadline came up quick so I rushed to complete the piece.

Here she is all done, just before leaving my home studio to drop her off at the gallery

The opening show at Good: a gallery was lots of fun with some wonderful art.

Here are some photos from the event:

Here I am, very happy with the placement of my painting, super stoked to be showing alongside some really wonderful works of art!

My good friend Darci ( Silly. Weird. Things. ) with her awesome alien tentacle lady painting!

All in all, I was very inspired by this group show and had a great time being a part of it. If you are in PDX this month, July, do take a moment to pop in and check out the art!

Much love,
-Chelsea Rose
