New Painting, Elephantess and print release

Just stoppin in the share my most recent finished painting:

Elephantess
"Elephantess"
Original acrylic painting by Chelsea Rose

I cant believe it took me so long to finish her! I started this one Sept. 1st. which means its taken me almost 2 months to complete. I think thats a testimate to how busy things have been.
This painting is loosely inspired by Lakshmi, Hindu Goddess of fortune. She is often depicted with beautiful elephants by her side but in my version I melded Lakshmi with her elephant counterparts. Her old fashioned, fancy aristocratic dress and top hat are meant to communicate her abundance/ prosperity/fortune. I tried to incorporate a couple of the traditional symbols associated with the Goddess Lakshmi: the Lotus in her hand( evolution), Gold on the lotus, dress, in her eyes(prosperity), red/magenta/pink dress(creative activity), elephant head(wisdom, purity, charity) and peacock feather in her hat(transmutation, eternal knowing and truth.)
It was fascinating taking the time to research and get to know Lakshmi. I had hoped to finish her in time for Diwali Day when she is often worshiped/celebrated but that didn't go as planned.
Anyhoo, I plan on releasing some 8"x10" prints of her soon, so keep an eye on my etsy shop.

Speaking of prints...I recently released a new one:

"Goddess of the Hunt"
original acrylic painting
8"x10" prints now available for $15 here.

And here is one of 9 art pendants up for grabs right now:

The art used in this pendant is an archival giclee print of my original acrylic painting "Mistress and the Orb"
Let this pendant serve as a thing of beauty or work as a good luck charm of sorts, stimulating your drive to explore the majestic and mysterious.
Available for $10 here.

More comin soon!
Much love,
-Chelsea Rose

Its Been A While.

Hello all,
I realize its been awhile since my last post. I am just now getting over a fairly intense bout of cold/flu. Feeling much improved though, thanks!

I wanted to share what I have been working on:
Work In Progress
Its a new painting that I am calling "Goddess Of the Hunt."
Its actually a commission piece for an old Venice beach sister friend, Sheera ( do click to take a listen to her music!), who has blossomed into an amazing singer and songwriter. She has commissioned me to do the art for her up and coming EP and wanted a fierce yet dreamy warrior woman.

It started out with this concept sketch:
Goddess of the Hunt
(original pen and ink drawing!)
Then I painted a rough background layer of acrylic on a 14" x 14" canvas and transferred the drawing via light projector with India ink pens to give myself the basic outline to flesh out:
Warrior Woman work in progress

And here is a closeup of my 1st swipe through with some color layering:
Warrior Woman work in progress
...The painting isn't done yet but I feel I am getting very close!

Now, switchin gears a bit here. I wanted to share with you my alter space:
My Alter
I am excited to have my lil alter featured in my friend GreenWoman's blog. She is doing an interesting series of blog posts about peoples sacred spaces and all the various ways people create them....Check It Out , and see more photos of my alter place plus some words I wrote about what having an alter space means for me, what the various things on my alter signify and more.

Rain is predicted for the weekend so I am going to stay at home this weekend instead of selling art at the Portland Saturday Market. Will be focusing on finishing up the above painting and workin out on my patio planting an herb garden :)

Sending love and light!

More Body painting session photos + new ink over acrylic paintings

So, in case you noticed i missed my blog update for last Friday i was in California visiting my family- so yee be warned this is a rather lengthy blog post since i am trying to catch up! I arrived back in Portland late night on Saturday and had Sunday to acclimate back into the groove of things. I was able to post 3 more photos from my most recent body painting shoot and i also took the time to document and list some new artwork for sale. Check it out:

....And there is a lot more of these to come! In about an hour i shot about 400 photos- which has left me with a bunch to pick and choose from. it has taken me awhile to narrow the catch down to a chosen few but i am making progress.
I am looking forward to this weekend's shoot with a lovely elderly woman- she will add some mature beauty and wisdom to the project- widening the age range and body type spectrum. I know i have said it before... but its interesting to see the twists and turns this project has made. Its unfurled to be a lot grander then i had visioned and im interested to see where and how it grows next.

In other news, while i was out of town danny held the fort by himself and set up a small booth of our art wares at the Last Thursday Artwalk on Alberta st fair:

The fair was swelling with people and vendors hanging out in the bright sunlight- i am so sorry to have missed it! But there is always next month now that the rain is pretty much backed off a bit.

I also have one more special something to share. Danny released a new podcast of music he has been working on under the name Bone and All.

check out his newly released music here. Its pretty trippy/psychedelic stuff and i make my first debut in his music in the 4th track where he used clips he recorded of me reading a poem of mine!
So yes...do have a listen to.

...and so its Monday and i have to get to work, so i better get going!

Best wishes to all and have a blessed week.

Out with the Old, In with the New- paintings

3 day weekends are such blessings.

On Saturday morning I was very excited to learn that i had sold a painting!
the Reckoning
------------SOLD---------------
14"x 18"
Original acrylic painting
by Chelsea Rose

I was contacted by someone who had been passing through Oregon and just so happened to wander into the feminist bookstore InOtherWords where i had a bunch of artwork being featured. While they couldn't buy and take anything home right away because they had a lot of musical equipment to fly home with...they decided to contact me once they were home about purchasing the piece. Thus, today after work i will be shipping this one out. This will be the first time i have shipped a larger painting of mine and I was a little nervous about it but I am happy to learn it isn't going to be a super expensive endeavour.
I am very glad "The Reckoning" has found a good home, although i am going to miss my gaggle of "fish of perceptions" and their weighty stares.

In the afternoon on Saturday Danny and I watched T.Ruth Art space Gallery from 1-6. We both brought art projects to work on. I was finally able to finish a painting i had been neglecting for far too long:

Endowed
"Endowed"
11"x14"
original acrylic painting
by Chelsea Rose
( the quality on this photo is poor. I will try and replace it with a better one soon)

....and because i love process shots, here are a couple photos i took while creating the painting:

The painting was based on this drawing of mine:
Endowment
( pen and ink drawing by Chelsea Rose)

i made this drawing while watching an interesting cartoon movie about Wonder Woman's amazonian princess origins. Seeing all the fierce strong warrior women was inspiring. I got to doodling and this daunting creature came out. I think she is some kind of druid, high priestess warrior woman who is "endowed" with an extra set of "windows to the soul." I wonder if they shoot laser beams?! :P

I transferred the drawing onto a red painted canvas. I transferred the pen and ink by projecting my illustration onto the canvas and tracing the outline. I then went in and began to put down the first layers of color.

work in progress
...more color work being done here.

waiting for the varnish to dry
...and here it is all finished. I was letting the varnish dry at this point.
You can see a lot of changes from this photo and the one above. I added a heavy black vignette around the piece while dropping her arms down and repositioning her hands. I also made the skin more blue/green with darker shadow.

...now i have to decide what i want to paint next. I have a bunch of blank canvas and they are all calling.

On Sunday Danny and I ran around to the local hardware stores working on getting the new apartment more livable. I picked up a bunch of pots and seeds and planted an herb garden on the patio: rosemary, chamomile, thyme, basil, cilantro, serreno chilies + more. I also planted some wild flower mixes and some morning glory vine. I am really hoping i get some sprouts!

Monday involved more home improvement chores...although Danny and I did slip away to hang out with some dear friends we had not seen in a long time.

All in all...it was a pleasant and productive 3 day weekend and i find myself feeling refreshed and ready to face the rest of the week. How was your 3 day weekend/memorial day weekend?

Much love and many blessings,
-Chelsea Rose

Body painting close up photos and news!

So that past week has been an eventful one. Just yesterday we finished moving to our new apartment- its amazing how much time and energy this can eat up but im happy for the change. I finally have my art space set up in a somewhat functional way so now i have little excuse not to work on the painting i have been neglecting for some time now. I hope to finish said painting this week. if all goes well on Friday i will do a blog entry to unveil the finished piece and talk about the creative process with a bunch of "work in progress" pictures.
In the meantime, last night i went through some of my body painting photos and chose 5 pictures i have yet to post that are more "close ups" then full body shots.
I wanted to share them with you:

...I also wanted to share with you an "out take" photo that i came across last night and knew i had to post:
Powah!
Powah
This is a photo i snapped of my model Blissful Hope as we had finished up with the shoot. She had washed her face and put her clothing on and was struck by how the body painting suddenly looked like fierce tattoo sleeves with her tank top on. so she posed just like that and insisted i get my camera out and snap one. I love it! It just reminds me that granted this body painting/photo project takes a lot of energy to generate but I have so much fun doing these shoots!

I have another pregnant body painting shoot scheduled for this Saturday inside T.Ruth Artspace gallery, so i am excited and looking forward to the weekend.
Thus far this body painting project has been a fascinating adventure. I am thrilled to have gotten to know the women who volunteered to be a part of the project. Their personal strengths and beauty have lent so much amazing energy- its extremely inspiring for me. I'm excited to see what the next step/level to this project might entail.

Id also like to give thanks, praise and many blessings to Tiffany Ruth, the owner of T.Ruth Art space where i have been painting and photographing my models. Tiffany is currently in the hospital due to medical complications. She should be released in a few days but I'm asking for those who can spare some good vibe to send it her way. She is an amazing and dear friend, strong and beautiful independant woman and an amazing asset and Jewel to the artistic community. I give thanks to her for all that she has done for me! I feel truly blessed to have her presence in my life.

Much love to all!

New artwork and work in progress

Its Friday. We made it.
Unfortunately the Last Thursday art walk on Alberta st was rained out so we didn't get to partake in those festivities. Its been rained out two months in a row! I do so hope next month will be favorable. I miss the community, the art, the exchange and the madness of the Alberta art walks. I normally love rain so I know the rain dance....just not the rain go away dance. Ah well, the art walk will manifest when the time is right!

In the meantime i am releasing some of my new creations:

Green Pixie vibes

....I love making these! I have a bunch of canvas and Masonite boards that i have begun to paint base colors on so that i can create some more of these ink drawings over acrylic.
I have a bunch of others listed for sale in the original artwork section of my etsy shop...so take a peak!
Also, If you have a certain pen and ink drawing of mine that you wish to have revisited in this manner please feel free to ask for a custom order! You are welcome to indicate what color background you would like said drawing to be done on.

I also wanted to share the bit of progress i made on the painting i am currently working on:
work in progress
this is a 11"x14" painting that i started last weekend. She is based of off this drawing of mine that i made while watching a neat cartoon movie about Wonder Woman's amazonian princess origins. Seeing all the fierce strong warrior women was inspiring. I got to doodling and this daunting creature came out. I think she is some kind of druid, high priestess warrior woman who is "endowed" with an extra set of "windows to the soul." I wonder if they shoot laser beams?! :P
A friend came over last night and when i asked if this particular creature was menacing he said simply " she looks like a business woman of sorts"...i thought that was a fun response.
I still need to do work to her. i feel the painting is missing something- i need to do something with the background perhaps. Maybe a city skyline or a simple dark oval vignette would do. not sure. I also need to flesh out and work on the hands....and add more layers of color and shine to her. She does have a good bit more color then is present in this photo...i think the lighting washed her out a bit.

After work today Danny is picking me up and whisking me away to Vancouver Washington for a great time to be had at Guerrilla Media's newest gallery/venue. It will be a music and art night featuring some local folk bands and "graf" inspired art.
the invitation reads as follows:

Music by: Aram Arslanian, The Shivas

More Black on White Body Art photos and painting in processs shots

This week has been pretty mellow. I have been working on revising more of the photos that i took last Saturday of my model Wenseay for my body painting project. She was my first dark model. I used white paint instead of the black that i have been using on my lighter models.
The effect was startling and very lovely.
Here are a couple more shots that I released over the week:
Apparition of Truth
(Body painting and photography by Chelsea Rose
Model: Wenseay)

Apparition of Truth
(Body painting and photography by Chelsea Rose
Model: Wenseay)

I have a lot more to edit and release!
This weekend i was hoping to do another shoot with a dark model and the white paint but nothing seems to have materialized. However, i did get a certain model to confirm to do a body painting shoot on March the 13th. Im very excited! She is a beautiful black lady with a tun of curves and sultry roundness. She will do perfectly. More details soon!

So, this weekend I guess I will be free to do a lot of photo editing and work on the painting I have been working on.
here are a few work in progress shots that I took during the week as I was working on the painting:
work in progress
I had painted this much during Tuesday night.

work in progress
I made a lot of progress and a bunch of changes Wednesday night. It seems my color palette has changed from green and purple to more oranges and reds. Not sure if i am content with this color scheme but I'm going to play with it a lot more over the weekend.

So now you know what i have been up to all week and what i will probably be doing all weekend since its predicted to be a rainy one.

Best wishes to all!
and hello to all my new blog followers. thanks so much for the support!

Love,

Now id like to talk about my recent going ons.

Cold morning
Here is a picture of Sushi-cat and I doing a bit of early morning window gazing before anyone was up on Saturday. Its been getting more chilly with each week and I wonder when we will get the first snow fall. This weekend I managed to back up all my computer files which really sets my mind at ease. I have had two computers die on me and both times lost years worth of creation and photos. I have learned the hard way.
This weekend I didnt do any painting at all. Im frustrated with the paint I have. I normally use System 3, 3D paint( super thick and saturated) but I cant seem to find it in any of the local art stores. Thus I have been using some really crappy transparent winsor and newton student brand and its making it impossible to do any cover ups, which is currently needful.
So i drew instead:
Endowment
Pen and Ink drawing.
I am sure this one will make my family a bit uncomfortable.
I was doodling on the couch while Danny and I watched a cartoon movie about Wonder Women's Amazon warrior princess origins. I think my mind was imagining some amazon warrior priestess, divinely endowed in an unusual way. Anyway...it was a fun doodle and I wanted to share it.
Trippy no?

Hanging my paintings for the show
I will be going on Tuesday to T.Ruth Art space to finally take down my paintings from my solo gallery show. My work was up for 2 months. Come Thursday Tiffany will have a new artist up there. I cant wait to go to the reception and see the new paintings all hung and meet the artist. Its going to be strange having my artwork back. I rather liked having some of my walls uncluttered by mass amounts of art...but it will be good to have them back. I ended up selling 6 smaller paintings during the time my art was up and I think im going to leave the rest of the smaller paintings with her so maybe she can sell them during the Holidays. It was an awesome opportunity and a wonderful/inspiring exercise and I feel blessed to have had it granted to me. Im not too sure if the whole gallery/art opening bizz is really my thing but I look forward to future opportunities and experiences to widen my artistic journey.

Thats it for now.
More later, I promise.

Much love,
-Chelsea Rose
